BLACKPINK members and Selena Gomez participated in online interview of The Morning Mash Up on September 11, 2020. Let’s find out how this relates to BTS and why ARMY got angry so much.
The American interviewer, at 4:20, complimented BLACKPINK members with the following phrase: “I congratulate you for being the first Kpop group in history to win the MTV Video Music Award (VMA)” . The BLACKPINK members responded with big smiles and hugshugged each other. The perfect synchronization intheir hugs hinted us that they are getting along with each other very well.
However, the situation is a little rough here. BLACKPINK is the first girl Kpop group to win an MTV WMA. (Note: There’s also the VMA that Girls’ Generation won in 2012, but it’s not American, it’s the Japanese version of VMAs)
But if we are really referring to the first Kpop group to win a VMA in history, the first group to achieve this was BTS with “Boy with Luv” in 2019. They also received the best group award in the K-pop category inaugured for the first time at that year. Including this year, BTS has 6 VMA awards in total over the past two years (with teh additional 2 Best Group awards and 3 awards from the song ON). BLACKPINK won its first and only VMA this year in the “Song of Summer” category with “How You Like That“.
BLACKPINK members were severely criticized by ARMY for not being honest, that they were resting on the BTS’s laurels, priding on an achievement that does not belong to them, etc. Comments like these raided the comments section of the interview video and several other forums.
Of course, the main criticism here should be on the interviewer who used that phrase. American announcers can be very sloppy with preliminary research before programs. If he asked the question in more detail, things would not turn into a mess.
Members of BLACKPINK may not have noticed the error in the phrase from the excitement of the program, or they may have been instructed by their company to remain silent when they fall into a situation where they might be compared to BTS . Of course, if they had given the due credit to BTS, for sure it would be an act that would have conquered our hearts.
