Latest situation in the SNOWDROP series: What is the real concern?
0

If you remember about the drama SNOWDROP, which we were delighted to have BLACKPINK Jisoo to playthe lead role; there were real concerns and confusion . In a few days, hundreds of thousands of signatures were collected and an official application was made to the Korean state authorities for the cancellation of the series. In this article, we will discuss why such an event took place and what developments followed.

Frankly, I didn’t “literally” understand for a long time why the opponents of the series stood up so angry. Then, the incident stuck in my head with the following statements from an opposition youngster:

“I’m a young Kpop listener and I follow Jisoo closely and admiringly. However, the script of the Snowdrop drama makes a big mistake on a very sensitive issue. My family was among the tortured ones during the Democratization Movements of 1987. The oppressive regime at that time tortured many who called rightfully for democracy. He accused the South Korean activists of “Being North Korea Agents” and had hundreds of them tortured and imprisoned under this slander despite they had no bounds to North Korea. It was totally a lie. In SNOWDROP, Jisoo’s future lover is a North Korean agent. Thus, in the series, the thesis of the oppressive cruel regime of that time is supported and even justified…”

It’s a delicate situation indeed! However, the team of scriptwriter and director of SNOWDROP is a team that has produced a super high quality production like “SKY CASTLE“, which is both of tremendous quality and perfectly addresses an important national wound again regarding education system. I still say let’s see the script first. In my opinion, there may even be a result that will satisfy those who object the series!

In the meantime, there have been important developments regarding the series in recent weeks:

  • The Korean Government did not accept mass petitions for the drama to be cancelled!
  • The character played by Jisoo in the drama was named the same as an activist who was at the forefront of the events of 1987 and was severely tortured. In my previous article, I commented on how the “love bug” character Jisoo act for would reflect that historic character. The drama makers addressed this issue and the name of Jisoo’s character was changed. The episodes shot so far have also been corrected with dubbing. Look, this situation reveals the sensitivity and adaptation capacity of the series producers!
  • Normally, Korean dramas are shot in 8 months. In this case, the series could be completed as soon as July 2021. However, Korean dramas usually have 16 episodes and are aired in 2 episodes per week. This coincides with a new series season every two months. SNOWDROP would miss the “June-July” season anyway, and would be able to catch the August-September season at the earliest.
  • The broadcast date of the series is still not finalized. In the rumor last week, a date was given as December. Hopefully it won’t be this late.
  • Some of the emoji shared by Jisoo mean that the drama will start “very soon”! Here is the post:

Yes, friends, this is how concerns and developments are… We look forward to it!
