J-Hope Asks, Jungkook Answers (Jungkook Interview)

J-Hope enters the room as “JeeeeeyyyyKeeeeeyyy” . They both point out that this interview situation is a little strange. J-Hope starts with askingquestions. They are constantly shaking hands, and Jimin and Jin had done this too. The situation must be a little strange for them all.

J-Hope: You composed the song “Your Eyes Tell”, for the Japanese version of the album BE? What are your plans for the future by taking part in the composition section?

Jungkook: I feel very comfortable composing songs as we make our own music. And isn’t it really gorgeous? The work we do is the reflection of my ideas and to be a part of the job. Reflecting my character and style from the beginning to the end. I want to convey my character and style to more people. I have this as a singer. I want to do more in the future. For “Your Eyes Tell” … Our songs are generally not selected for our albums. I used to watch animations when I was little and I still love it. Maybe that’s why I’m familiar with Japanese songs. The general mood suits me. I work on Korean songs in the same way. However, it is as if my style is more like Japanese style so that I can reflect myself in my work somehow.

J-Hope: Right. I think each member has their own style and character. I am always impressed when I move this to work. “Oh, he’s so good at it”, “You can do this part like this too”, “He has that vibe” I think. From now on, I hope you can show your own style more.

Jungkook: I realize I am not good enough. I want to struggle with many things.

J-Hope: You added the song “Stay” to your album “BE”. As far as I know, you have produced many songs. I wonder how you will present these songs in the future. For example, I was wondering, will you give a direction to your music?

Jungkook: Even though I am a singer myself, I can still be a fan of another singer. I saw many artists. I saw that the artists work differently. I thought I was staying in one place for a long time. After that, I think I resemble Jin as a character. He is quite frank and correct. I don’t know if it will be simple, but I have a lot in my mind that I want to convey, but I have little information about myself. I have ideas but I cannot convey them. There are many things in your mind, but you cannot put it on paper or draw it. There are a lot of things I would like to try and work on but I cannot express them due to lack of knowledge. Talking about my own stories until I have the experience I can do. I was going to give “Stay” to my fans as the last song of my mixtape, but it fits nicely with the “BE” album and naturally it was added to the album. “Still With You” was written for the tough times our band and I went through. I could express it easily because I feel it in my heart. After that, although sincere songs are important, there are also very different people, who think differently and come from different backgrounds. I want to be an artist who creates various stories by creating imaginary scenarios and situations.

J-Hope: I usually find it easier to write my own experience. But you’re putting yourself in an imaginary script. I think this is more difficult.

Jungkook: Yes I know it’s difficult but I want to try new things. If I keep doing this, I will get used to it and thus challenge myself.

J-Hope: I think it’s perfect, I believe the challenges are good. I hope you try a lot of things as soon as possible. I also wonder how it works while composing songs. We all have our own routine.

Jungkook: I start writing the melody first when there is no specific theme or track.

J-Hope: Are you mumbling?

Jungkook: Consider “Still With You” for instance. There were no melodies, nothing. I wrote the melody, added the lyrics and recorded it. Then I asked for a professional for help.

J-hope: So you just turned on the metronome and started muttering what’s on your mind.

Jungkook: I had a reference on how to make the song. I assumed it could be a song for this mood and I started recording the song.

J-Hope: Oh, interesting.

Jungkook: Namjoon also wonders how I write melody without a specific path.

J-Hope: Sometimes it’s also tried. But this method does not work on him. This is a difficult method.

Jungkook: Track is set and if I can edit the song, it’s just cutting the song and adding to it, I can do that. However, I cannot do the professional part. If there is nothing set at the beginning, I can do whatever I want. I can spread it instead of compressing it. I start drawing from scratch.

J-Hope: It’s really hard to start something from scratch and you can do it. This is a really good method. You are a genius!

Jungkook: No, no (both laughing). I don’t think I am a genius.

J-Hope: I’m asking this question just for fun. Are you thinking about yourself? Or are you sharing the edited parts? In other words, you can work on it first and present it to others. You can share the edited parts and ask how it is and get your views. Is that the way you work?

Jungkook: I guess it depends. If I don’t like the song, I don’t share it with others. It takes my time to work on a project. I am writing, erasing, re-writing and so forth.

J-Hope: Do you remember “Your Eyes Tell”? You showed me in the car. You said J-Hope would be great for the Japanese album.

Jungkook: Yes it’s true but the song was more or less complete. If I feel that the song is not complete, I hesitate to ask for other people’s opinion. First of all, I want to complete the job.

J-Hope: Is the song “Stay” released all at once?

Jungkook: Yes it was already a ready song and I finished it in a day. But then we added Namjoon’s rap part. We stretched the song and everything became clearer as more people were involved.

J-Hope: You are the main vocalist of our band. What is your strength?

Jungkook: I honestly am still lacking in professional skills like being a vocalist. But I don’t want to lose my character while focusing on the vocal. I have things to improve but I have a crisp clean style. I think I have my own style but I can also mix different colors. I’m not saying that my vocals are excellent, nor that I haven’t tried taking vocal lessons. But the reason I haven’t taken much lessons since my trainee is when I change my vocals, I lose my style and consequently my character. First I want to stay true to my style and improve myself in the vocal parts. If I develop the vocal first, then it is difficult to fix it. That’s why I tried not to take lessons. That’s why I practiced myself a lot.

J-Hope: I think you know what your vocal strength is? Your vocals are simple and calm. Relaxing. Do you know how big is this? Because songs can give calmness to the listener. Whenever I listen to you, it gives me peace of mind. You relax the listener.

Jungkook: If there is a song, I am not trying to squeeze my character and style into the song. If I put my color on the song, the song is broken, right? For me it’s like putting my color on the song.

J-Hope: This is a gift given to you. I hope you will present more as a vocalist in the future. Is there a song that best presents its sound when you sing, record, release while working on the album?

Jungkook: “Euphoria”. I’m lucky to get a song like Euphoria. At that time, my voice was like a baby and now my voice is more stable. At that time, I was constantly thinking about my vocals. I had a hard time recording this song.

J-Hope: I think Euphoria is a masterpiece. Every time I listen to it at a concert, I am impressed. Although the song is familiar. Anyway, it’s a pretty good song. How would you like to deliver your music on this album or in the future? Is there a specific type? Are there any stories you want to share with music like we talked about before?

Jungkook: I can now convey my experiences with music. But as I said, I will try to turn a story into a song. The spirit of the music can change according to the story. I want to focus on all genres, rather than just one genre. I think about it all the time. If I can understand and do what to do with music and about myself as a human being, if I can think deeply about music without forgetting them, things beyond my wish come naturally to me.

J-Hope: You’re grown up now :)

Jungkook: I’m not the old one anymore.

J-Hope: We grew up together since childhood. We used to hug each other. I know how you grew up and now you have your own style of music. As someone who has just witnessed the changes you are going through, I wonder your thoughts and future plans. Since you are one of my favorite friends, I thought about these questions a lot.

Jungkook: I was once having dinner with Bang PD. At that time, I was composing songs for my own taste. Bang PD said to me “You weren’t a dancer?” He suggested that I produce songs considering my performances. Then I decided that I could do all of these to become a president like Bang PD. (Laughing)

J-Hope emphasizes that what Bang PD said is logical. Then Jungkook says: “I have to do a mixtape first. I want it. It will have three main songs and each one will have MV. Each. one will have different choreography.

J-Hope tells her to give it a try. “It would be good to try different things and different points of view. I also told that to Taehyung. You will find out what people think of your work.
